An Israeli strike on Iran has been «imminent» for about two years now and commentators everywhere seem to be vacilating between alarm and dismissal. The volume of announcements, alleged leaks to the media, and public disagreement between various Israeli and US officials is leaving almost everyone scratching their heads over what is really going on.

On Tuesday, an article in Ma’ariv suggested that Netanyahu and Barak have set a deadline of 25 September for Obama to clearly state that the US itself will take military action. The date is the opening of the UN general assembly in New York, and also the eve of Yom Kippur, one of the most significant dates in the Jewish calendar.
The implication is that, in the absence of a public declaration, Israel will press on with its own plans to strike at the Iranian nuclear programme.
American and Israeli officials are working to arrange a meeting between US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at which the White House will assure Israel that the US will use force to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons drive by next June at the latest if the Islamic Republic has not halted its program by then, Israel’s Channel 10 news reported on Tuesday night.
The meeting will take place in New York or Washington at the end of September or the very beginning of October, the report said. David Axelrod, senior strategist in Obama’s re-election campaign, is coordinating arrangements for the meeting, the report said.
The key formulation being discussed for Obama to assure Netanyahu is that the US “will attack Iran by June 2013″ if the Iranian nuclear weapons drive has not halted by then, the report said.
In light of the recent reports, I highly doubt the Israeli Gov’t/Military are willing to wait another full year before they attempt to halt the Iranian Nuclear Programme. Especially after all the comments in regards to «weeks not months» before a decision will need to be mad.
I’m almost positive that if Israel strikes Iran’s military/nuclear sites without the US’s initial help from their cruise missiles and airplanes, that once one missile hits the US Green Zone in Iraq (Which will be a main target), then the US will hit back hard.
